Kumbakonam is the temple city which has 12 shiva temples and 7 Vishnu temples in it. Mahamaham is a famous festival which happens once in every 12 years in kumbakonam simillar to kumbhamela in north. It is famous for temples, beetle leaves, Also it is located as the hub for the Navagraha temples and it has many other famous temples like Swamimalai (one of the arupadai vedu's of Lord muruga), Uppili appan temple(one of the famous vishnu temples among the 108 Dhivya desams),etc.
Arts:
Metal art works(swamimalai),wooden art works(papanasam), Silks clothes(Thirubhuvanam), Bronze Kuthuvilaku's or lamps(Nachiyar kovil).
Education:
It has many veda padasala's in it. "South Indian Cambridge" , is how the govt college for men in kumbakonam is popularly called. It is one of the oldest colleges in india which has produced luminant personalities like Ramanujam(The greate mathematical genius), Silver toung Srinivasa shasthiri,etc.
Ashrams and Spiritual organizations:
It is also a holy place which has many ashrams, samadhi's of realized saints. Vijeyndra Math(Ragavendra's guru's guru), 2 sankaracharyar's samadhi in Sankara math, Bodhendra's Samadhi near by kumbakonam, Ramasadhu's Samadhi at Sadana niketan , Ramakrishna vivekananda Mandram, Vallalar Math near by kumbakonam, Akobila math, Mauna sami's Samadhi, and many more on the banks of cauvery, etc.
